War Office 24th October 1889.
Referring to the War Office letter dated the 29th December 1888, and to the Colonial Office letter, in reply dated the 9th January last, on the subject of the proposed Auxiliary Artillery for China and Singapore, I am desired by Mr. Secretary Stanhope to state for Lord Knutsford's information that it has now been decided to supply the men required for these auxiliaries from the same class of Natives of India as the Madras Sappers and Miners are recruited, and a communication has been made to the Secretary of State for India, with a view to the Government of that country being moved to take the necessary steps for carrying out the service.
